I love a good wine bar. Really, I do. But I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to most.
And what might that be? Just that most wines on the list are only available by the bottle. If you are looking to sample or just have a glass of a favorite (and sometimes pricey) vintage, you are just out of luck, my friend. You are forced to purchase the entire bottle – perhaps getting something that is not to your taste or that just gives you a serious cramp in your wallet. It’s kind of a bummer.
You’ll find your occasional bar that does offer all wines by the glass. But I’ve found that most of them have a pretty puny list: Twenty, maybe thirty bottles to choose from.
Then you find a fantastic spot like Taste in The Hague, Netherlands. And you feel like you’ve died and gone to wine loving heaven.
Let’s just skip the wine list for a moment. The place itself is sophisticated and charming without being overly stuffy. The outside patio is perfect for a sunny day – you’ll have a brilliant view of The Hague’s famous Hofvijver (Court Pond) and Little Tower. And the inside? It’s simply spectacular: all comfy leather couches and Swarovski crystal light fixtures. The place has some serious ambiance without making you feel like you are too uncool to hang out there.
The staff is great, too. They are friendly, knowledgeable and happy to let you take your time as you peruse the wine list. They understand it may take you a minute to decide.
Because, and this is the best part, Taste has over 200 different bottles available. And each one is also available by the glass. It’s the perfect way to spend an evening whether you spend your day exploring the Keukenhof with your family, checking out Girl with the Pearl Earring or just pursuing some international justice. What’s not to love about that?
